Dogs on leads and animal litter - new regulations

Community

Council has recently implemented new dog on lead and animal litter controls through its Local Law No.2 - General Public Amenity.

The updated Local Law went through a community consultation process in 2016 and aims to address many of the animal nuisance issues that affect the amenity and liveability of our municipality.

Signs indicating the designated dog on lead areas have recently been installed. The designated areas have been located around schools and town centre areas where dogs that are not under effective control may cause issues for pedestrians and traffic.

Within these areas, dog owners are required to keep their dog on a lead at all times.

Towns with these designated areas include Bannockburn, Inverleigh, Lethbridge, Linton, Meredith, Napoleons, Rokewood, Smythesdale and Teesdale.

The Local Law also addresses the issue of animal litter and requires animal owners to remove animal litter that is deposited in public places.

The removal of animal litter to keep our public spaces clean and as a courtesy to other residents, is now a well-accepted practice within townships and public spaces across Australia.
