Dine Out In Golden Plains In April

Media Release

Four permanent outdoor dining locations are being established in Golden Plains Shire, encouraging residents and visitors to purchase takeaway food from local businesses.

Council received a $250,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Local Councils Outdoor Eating and Entertainment Package to install outdoor dining locations in Bannockburn, Smythesdale, Inverleigh and Meredith to encourage COVIDSafe outdoor dining. All selected sites are popular community spaces close to local eateries and with easy access for travellers:

Bannockburn – Bannockburn Heart, corner High and Milton Streets

  • Three new shade sails and five table settings on a new synthetic turf

Smythesdale – Smythesdale Town Green, Brooke Street

  • Two shade sails and four plastic table settings on new gravel pad

Inverleigh – New play space, East Street

  • New shade sail and two table settings on a new synthetic turf

Meredith – Corner Staughton and Wallace Streets

  • Re-staining existing platforms, bench seats and furniture settings

The new table settings in Bannockburn, Smythesdale and Inverleigh are all made of recycled plastic, and each site includes one table setting that is accessible for all abilities.

Construction and works are complete at the Bannockburn site, with works to be completed before Easter at the Meredith and Inverleigh locations. The Smythesdale outdoor dining space is expected to be completed in April.

Mayor Cr Helena Kirby visited the Bannockburn Heart this morning to inspect the new outdoor dining space and encouraged the community to embrace the new facilities over the upcoming Easter break.

“Thanks to funding from the Victorian Government, Council has been able to deliver enhanced and permanent outdoor dining spaces in Bannockburn and Meredith, with works underway for some great areas in Inverleigh and Smythesdale as well.

“Where other councils opted for temporary facilities, we wanted to ensure our outdoor dining areas will be available to support local businesses well into the future, and these permanent upgrades will do just that.

“It’s been a tough year for many local businesses. As we approach the April school holidays and with more areas for outdoor dining, it’s the perfect time to support our local takeaway eateries recovering from COVI19 restrictions.”

As part of the Government funding, Council will promote the new spaces across the region to encourage visitors and locals to enjoy these spaces and support the nearby local businesses during April. This campaign and community events will be supported by two new variable message boards purchased as part of the grant. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Council has also supported businesses across the Shire throughout the COVID-19 pandemic with its COVID-19 Financial Hardship Policy.
