Community Grants program celebrates 21st year

Media Release

Golden Plains communities joined together last night in Rokewood for the announcement of successful grants under the Community Grants program – and to mark 21 years of the successful and popular initiative.

Since its launch in 1996, the Community Grants program has granted over $2.24M in funding. Through matching funding, Council’s investment in community grants has delivered a total of $6.44M in value to local communities.

The 886 projects funded over 21 years of the program have supported Council’s objective to encourage common interest groups to take an active involvement in the life of their community for the overall benefit of that community to become stronger and more economically, environmentally and socially sustainable.

Mayor Cr Des Phelan was on hand to congratulate the successful groups.

“Community groups representing 30 different Golden Plains communities from Batesford and Barunah Plains, to Smythesdale and Steiglitz, have received community grants over the past 21 years,” said Cr Phelan.

“This year’s grants will assist our aim of supporting community groups to complete some much-needed projects.

“Community groups are encouraged to look at their local needs, their recreation and meeting areas, and think about creative and innovative ways to enhance their spaces and projects.

“Council looks forward to the new community infrastructure and events that result from community ideas.

In the current form of the Program, grants of up to $5,000 are provided on a matched basis with the community group’s contribution provided in-kind or in cash.

Ongoing development of this program ensures it continues to meet the needs of Golden Plains communities through increased opportunities for focus areas of the community such as:

  • young people and people with disabilities,
  • improving communities' access to information,
  • improving community facilities,
  • increasing participation and leadership opportunities for women and girls, and
  • increasing the range of community activities and protecting the natural environment.
