Call It Out During The 16 Days Of Activism

General

Golden Plains Shire Council is supporting Respect Victoria’s ‘Respect Women: Call It Out’ campaign during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.

The 16 Days of Activism is an annual global initiative that began on Wednesday, and runs until Thursday, 10 December 2020.

Respect Victoria’s campaign encourages people to call out sexism, sexual harassment and disrespect towards women. This year’s theme is ‘Respect is…’ which encourages all members of the community consider what respect means to them, and to embrace the types of behaviours and actions that represent and personify ‘respect’.

The Municipal Association of Victoria provided all Victorian councils, including Golden Plains Shire Council, with $2,500 funding to support the campaign. Golden Plains Shire Council is conducting a number of initiatives, including delivering an online community event on the 16 Days of Activism campaign with comedian and author Nelly Thomas on 9 December, an internal workshop to Council staff to promote better understanding of gender inequality, lighting up the Golden Plains Civic Centre in orange, social media campaign and community signage across the Shire encouraging residents to call out sexism and disrespect towards women.

Council’s 16 Days of Activism community event will run online from 7.30 to 9pm on Wednesday 9 December, with registrations essential. Following Nelly Thomas’ presentation, team members from Women’s Health Grampians will provide attendees with some practical tools on how to be an active bystander to call out disrespect towards women. More information on the event, including how to register can be found here.
