Golden Plains Shire Council is delighted to have the Great Vic Bike Ride travel through Golden Plains from Inverleigh to Buninyong, after an overnight stay in Inverleigh on Saturday 3 December.

The 2022 Great Vic Bike Ride (The Ride) will begin in Koroit on Saturday 26 November and over 8 days will make its way to Inverleigh through Timboon, Birregurra, Apollo Bay and Anglesea.

The Ride will see approximately 3,000 riders and 800 support people stay in Inverleigh, with local businesses encouraged to get involved and make the most of the boost in visitation to the town. Fundraising opportunities are also available to local community groups at the campsite which will be held at the Inverleigh Recreation Reserve, 2 Railway Street, Inverleigh, 3321.

Organisers of the Ride, Bicycle Network, will host a Community Meeting for Inverleigh residents on Thursday 25 August from 6pm at the Inverleigh Recreation Reserve. The Community Meeting will be a chance for local community groups and businesses to explore the fundraising and business opportunities available to them, discuss how to best maximise the Ride’s visit to town and to ask any questions they may have. All community members are welcome to attend.

Council has worked closely with event organisers to bring the Ride to Golden Plains and in June, awarded Bicycle Network a $5,000 Community Strengthening Grant to support the event’s overnight stay in the Shire.

Golden Plains Shire Council Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble is pleased to welcome the Great Vic Bike Ride to Golden Plains.

“It’s exciting for Golden Plains to see such an iconic bike ride travel through the Shire and spend the night in Inverleigh, where riders will have the opportunity to explore and enjoy all that the town has to offer.

“This is a fantastic chance to showcase Golden Plains, particularly Inverleigh, and I encourage local businesses and community groups to get involved and make the most of the Ride’s visit to the Shire.

“The riders will get to enjoy some of the best parts of Western Victoria including the beautiful scenery and charming towns of Golden Plains. We very much look forward to welcoming the Great Victorian Bike Ride to our Shire later in the year and I, personally, look forward to cycling with them for this leg of their journey across our Shire.”

The last Great Vic Bike Ride was held in 2019 and saw more than 3,000 people ride from Robe to Torquay along the Great Ocean Road.

After a few years off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Great Vic Bike Ride is pleased to return, with riders invited to come together to share three, five or nine days of camaraderie, camping and cycling through some of the most picturesque pockets of the country, including Golden Plains.
