On 30 July, Council purchased the property at 66 Brooke Street, Smythesdale at public auction.

At the corner of Heales Street and the Glenelg Highway, the property is located adjacent to The Well, Council’s facility that is home to its Customer Hub, maternal and child health service, library outreach service, community rooms, Digital Hub, Smythesdale Pharmacy and the medical office.

The property was purchased at the price of $384,000, with additional associated costs including stamp duty and legal fees. The 1,357m2 property includes the building that was formerly St Mary’s Catholic Church.

Council made the decision to purchase the property at its Unscheduled Meeting on 29 July. The item, Strategic Land Purchase, was discussed in confidential, under section 3(1) as detailed in Section 66 of the Local Government Act 2020. Under sub-section g(ii) of that definition, the information was deemed confidential as (g) private commercial information, being information provided by a business, commercial or financial undertaking that (ii) if released, would unreasonably expose the business, commercial or financial undertaking to disadvantage.
