Three Trails Project

The Three Tails Project will deliver significant upgrades to three multi-use trails. This consultation is now closed.

Council’s Three Trails Project will deliver significant upgrades to three multi-use trails, popular with local and visiting walkers, cyclist and horse-riders. As plans for the Three Trails Project are developed, Council sought feedback from users of the Ballarat–Skipton Rail Trail, Kuruc a Ruc Trail and Rainbow Bird Trail.

About

The Three Trails Project will improve and upgrade three significant multi-use trails: Ballarat–Skipton Rail Trail, Kuruc a Ruc Trail and Rainbow Bird Trail. Popular with local and visiting walkers, hikers, cyclists and horse-riders, the trails span a total of 101km and connect 15 different townships and communities across Golden Plains Shire, as well as City of Ballarat and Corangamite Shire.

Improvements to these three valuable trails will encourage more local residents in our growing communities to enjoy the trails and new visitors to the region to enjoy the picturesque Golden Plains.

The Three Trails Project will upgrade and improve the current trail infrastructure, as well as design and installation of new supportive infrastructure, including: signage; shelters, seating, picnic tables and chairs; decking upgrades; safety corrals at major highway crossings; culvert and bridge upgrades; spray seal of trail sections; upgrades to the Pittong Sleepover; installation of trail counters for data collection; and environmental works including tree trimming.

As Council finalises the plans to break ground on the Three Trails Project, local residents and trails users were asked to share their views and experiences to inform the delivery of the upgrade.

Engagement Update

From 26 April to 26 May 2021, Council sought feedback from walkers, cyclists, horse-riders and community members who love and value the trails. Feedback was able to be provided by completing a survey online at Council's website, by scanning QR codes on signage along the three trails or by completing a paper survey available from Council's Customer Service Centres. Walkers, cyclists, horse-riders and community members were also able to have their say at in-person consultation sessions on Sunday 23 May at three trail locations near:

  • Smythesdale Hut, Heales Street
  • Avalon Nursery, Haddon
  • Dereel Community Hall, Swamp Road

What Happens Next

Council will use the feedback collected to help finalise the plans to break ground on the Three Trails Project later in 2021.
