Community groups invited to a ‘pop-up space’ workshop

Council will run workshops in Smythesdale (Wednesday 3 May) and Bannockburn (Thursday 4 May) to show community groups how to set up a pop-up space in their towns.

A pop-up space usually involves decorating a public area in a cheap and fun way that makes it inviting and grabs the attention of local people. These activated spaces, which might be at your local park, hall or recreation facility, can help community groups achieve their goals and have a positive impact on the community.

Local groups and clubs can activate a  space in their community to promote their activities, recruit new members, raise awareness about local issues—the list goes on! A pop-up space could be used for a:

  • Kids’ circus afternoon
  • A place for people to meet and have fun
  • Weekly planned cricket game
  • Crafter-noon craft session
  • or for a range of other activities!

These spaces will help bring people in your community together and create stronger and more active communities.

Pop-Up Space workshops in Golden Plains

With VicHealth funding, Council will run two workshops to help local groups make a difference in their communities via pop-up spaces. Workshop details are as follows:

·         The Well, Smythesdale—Wednesday 3 May, 6:30-8:30pm

·         Bannockburn Cultural Centre—Thursday 4 May, 6:30-8:30pm

Consultants from CoDesign, who are experts in helping communities activate their neighbourhoods, will lead the workshops and share lots of ideas gathered from across Australia.

Participants will:

  • Learn how to set up and deliver fun, exciting and effective pop-up spaces
  • Pick up handy strategies to help place the pop-up spaces in the best community spots
  • Get ideas on where to find cheap or free materials, and
  • Learn about the many benefits of creating new and friendly spaces.

RSVPs required (see below).

The Create Crate

Council has also put together the Create Crate, a mobile activation trailer packed with fun stuff to use, including equipment and games that will help community groups get started with their pop-up spaces. This can be hired by community groups and was funded by VicHealth to help people get active and stay connected.

Curious to find out more or to RSVP for a workshop?

If you or anyone you know would be interested in attending one of the workshops, or to find out more about the Create Crate, contact Scarlet Cridland, Create Crate Project Officer on or 5220 7111.
