Health Promotion
What is Health Promotion?
The Ottawa Charter (1986) defines health promotion as:
... the process of enabling people to increase control over, and improve, their health.
Key factors that are known to have a major impact on health include:
- Being part of the community
- Freedom from discrimination
- Access to income and work
- Feeling good about yourself
- Access to services when you need them.
These factors have implications for all aspects of our lives including our personal relationships, employment, recreation and education.
Who is the Health Promotion Team?
The Golden Plains Shire Health Promotion Program is a partnership between Golden Plains Shire, Ballarat District Nursing & Healthcare, Barwon Health and Ballarat Community Health Centre.
Follow the links below to find out more about the agencies involved in the partnership:
Funded by the Department of Human Services in 2004 the program has a commitment to:
- Promote wellbeing and prevent future ill-health among Golden Plains residents and communities
- Plan and develop health promotion strategies that are informed by and responsive to community needs, issues and opportunities
- Improve local services for managing ill-health amongst the Shire's residents.
The Health Promotion Program aims to plan, implement and evaluate health promotion activities across the Shire, based around the three primary health service hubs. These are the:
NORTHERN HUB (Haddon & surrounding areas in the north west of the Shire)
CENTRAL HUB (Dereel and surrounding areas in the centre of the Shire)
SOUTHERN HUB (Bannockburn and surrounding areas in the south of the Shire)
