About Us
The Golden Plains Farmers Market is operated by Golden Plains Shire Council.
Mission:
To provide a genuine farmers' market experience for visitors and residents that strengthens opportunities for local growers and producers, and provides customers with access to quality, nutritional and healthy products in a relaxed and fun environment.
Specific objectives are to:
- Raise the profile of the region as producing a diverse range of quality food and wine products;
- Provide for greater diversity of market outlets for local growers and producers;
- Increase visitor numbers to Golden Plains;
- Expand the range of produce available for purchase within the region;
- Provide linkages with local retailers and other town centre activities; and
- Strengthen the local economy.
Key underpinning values are that the market is genuine and minimises the "food miles" involved in bringing quality fresh and value added produce to the public in a market environment.
Products:
Fine local fare, farm fresh local fruit and vegetables, jams, olives, olive oil, eggs, wines, bread, plants, flowers and artisan meats.
Background:
Golden Plains Shire has a wide range of food and wine producers who have taken advantage of the good soils and weather to live and work in the region. The need for a Farmers' Market was identified after a series of community meetings with food producers in Golden Plains Shire in 2007.
A feasibility study was undertaken in 2008 by Street Ryan and Associates Pty Ltd that identified that a Farmers' Market in Bannockburn could be feasible. Golden Plains Shire Council in December 2008 approved the concept of the Golden Plains Farmers' Market and authorised officers to call for tenders to manage the market.
Authenticity:
The Golden Plains Farmers Market has been developed in accordance with the Victorian Farmers' Market Association (VFMA) definition of an authentic farmers market .
"A predominantly local fresh food and produce market that operates regularly at a public location which provides a suitable environment for farmers and food producers to sell their farm origin product and their associated value added primary products directly to customers."
