Who Are We?
The Golden Plains Shire Health and Wellbeing Team is a partnership initiative between Golden Plains Shire, Ballarat District Nursing & Healthcare, Barwon Health and Ballarat Community Health.
Funded by the Department of Health the Health and Wellbeing Team has a commitment to working in partnership to enhance the overall health & wellbeing of individuals and communities across Golden Plains.
The key priorities for the Health and Wellbeing Team include:
- Promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Building healthy communities through increased physical activity and good nutrition
- Improving capacity building through evaluation and partnership development.
What Do We Do?
The Health and Wellbeing Team provide a range of activities and services from four main hubs. These are:
NORTHERN COMMUNITY CENTRE, HADDON
THE WELL - SMYTHESDALE BUSINESS HEALTH & COMMUNITY HUB
BANNOCKBURN FAMILY SERVICES CENTRE
We also provide a range of other activites and programs that include:
Health Information and Resources
A range of health information and resources are availabe for individuals, communities and events. This includes information on a variety of topics including mental health, diabetes, men's health, relationships, and available health and community services. Please contact the Health and Wellbeing Team or drop into one of the above Hubs to enquire about any of the resources available.
Heart Foundation Walking
Heart Foundation Walking is a network of Free community based walking groups led by volunteer walk organisers. The Heart Foundation Walking Area Coordinator for Golden Plains Shire can provide assistance to establish new walking groups or support any existing groups across the Shire to recruit walkerss or plan walks with other groups. Gem of an Idea Grant
The Health and Wellbeing Team currently has funding available for "Gem of an Idea" grants. These small grants of up to $500 are available for non profit community groups to undertake projects or activities aimed at promoting community connections, good nutrition, physical activity and/ or mental wellbeing. Healthy Ageing
The Team provides support to the Senior Citizen groups across the Shire, located at Bannockburn, Inverleigh, Rokewood, Meredith, Linton and Smythesdale. We also deliver annual Seniors Week celebrations in October at various locations across the Shire. For more information please contact Rebecca Hickey on 5220 7189 or rhickey@gplains.vic.gov.au.
Snapshots 2013
Golden Plains Shire residents aged 65 years or older who have a Pensioner Concession Card are invited to register before 28 February 2013 to take part in Snapshots day trips. Cost is $25 per person per tour. Tour destinations include:
- Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show
- Werribee Open Range Zoo
- National Gallery of Victoria
- Immigration Museum Melbourne
- National Wool Museum Geelong
- Melbourne Zoo

Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan
Our Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan "Healthy People - Healthy Places" sets the overarching framework for all of the policies and partnerships that must be in place if people in the Shire are to enjoy good physical and mental health in great communities. For more information click here.
