Garbage Collections
A weekly collection services 97% of households in the Shire. To ensure your bin is collected, follow these simple steps:
- Place your bin out the night before collection is due. No guarantee is given that collection times will not change on the day. While Council and its contractor endeavour to maintain a consistent collection time, if your bin is not out for collection when the truck arrives, the truck will not return.
- Place your bin with the handle facing towards your property, so the lid opens facing the road.
- Make sure your bin is not overfull and that the lid is closed.
- No HARD WASTE should be placed in the garbage or recycling bin.
Items that should not be placed in the garbage bin include:
- Gas bottles
- Fencing wire
- Electrical wire
- Electrical appliances
- Bricks
- Concrete
- Green waste
- Paint tins & farm chemicals
Council provides the 240-litre garbage bin at a cost, while one recycling bin is provided free of charge by Council.
Council provides a fortnightly recycling collection, which services 97% of all households within the municipality. Residents are encouraged to recycle their rubbish. Please remember that loose plastic and supermarket bags are NOT recyclable and should be placed in the garbage bin.
Clean items that can be placed in the recycling bin are:
- Newspapers and cardboard, including phone books
- Milk and juice cartons (rinsed)
- Plastic bottles and containers (with lids removed)
- Glass bottles and jars (with lids removed)
- Metal and aluminium food and aerosol cans
- Items marked with the recycling code 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 may be placed in the bin.
Only general non-hazardous household waste can be placed in your refuse bin or disposed of at either of Council's landfill sites. Hazardous items from your household are to be taken to one of the Shire's landfills. Please note that commercial quantities will not be accepted.

FAQ
How much does a new garbage bin cost?
A new garbage bin costs $123.00 for the 2012/2013 financial year and can be collected from the Bannockburn or Linton Customer Service Centres or can be delivered with your recycle bin. You pay for, and therefore own, your garbage bin. Recycling bins are delivered free of charge by the contractor and remain the property of Council.
If I have a large family, can I have a second bin?
Yes. You will, however, have to pay $123.00 for the second bin, as well as a second garbage rate for the second collection. The reason for this is that the Waste Management Contractor charges Council for every bin picked up.
For 2012-2013, the single collection garbage rate is $229.00. This amount is made up of a Council Charge ($204.00) and a Residential State Landfill Levy ($25.00). Both of these charges are GST exclusive.
The rate for a second collection (and any subsequent collections) is $222.40. This amount includes GST.
Commercial Properties
If your property is a Commercial premises, the single collection garbage rate is $251.90. This amount is made up of a Council Charge ($224.40) and a Commercial State Landfill Levy ($27.50). Both of these charges include GST.
Why are bins not collected?
If you have placed any of the items that are not allowed in the garbage or recycling service, it may be grounds for the garbage contractor to reject the collection bin. Council's garbage vehicle can lift a maximum bin weight of approximately 30kg.
If you have failed to place your bin out the night before collection is due and the truck arrives before your bin is put out, the bin will not be collected.
If you are unaware of any reason why your bin hasn't been collected, please call Customer Service on 5220 7111 or 1300 36 30 36.
Can garbage cause damage to collection trucks?
Yes. Items such as engine parts, roofing iron, concrete slabs and fencing wire etc can cause major damage to the garbage trucks' lifting and compaction equipment. A gas bottle is extremely dangerous as crushing of the bottle may cause it to explode.
